Advantages
Operate at low, mid and high pH - Fortis C18 not only operates at low pH, but will also operate in high pH buffers. Tested upto pH 12, this means that the analyst has the ability to quickly equilibrate between pH's without the need for multiple columns. Fortis C18 is QC tested with basic analyte probes to ensure best in class peak shape, a tight specification on these peak shapes ensures robust, reproducible column-to-column. High retention of Fortis C18 gains multiple benefits; improved resolution, good loadability, high organic concentrations leading to sensitivity improved MS spray and decreased volume prep fraction collection, quicker 'dry down times'.
Peak Shape
Peak shape is critical for many of the factors involved in a good LC or LC/MS method. Pyridine/Phenol is a good test of ion exchange occuring on a silica surface Phenol acts as a neutral, only interacting with the hydrophobic stationary phase, whilst the pyridine is a "small" basic molecule which will interact with any silanols that are present. Peak shape is critical to the peak height that is achieved, resolution and therefore sensitivity of the method.
High Retention
Using the Carr equation we see that Resolution is effected by retention achieved, Fortis C18 has a 380m2/g surface area so offers the analyst plenty of retention which can be used to gain resolution. This also leads to high loadability and high concentrations of organic modifier leading to higher sensitivity. Collection of fractions is also made more efficient by retaining aanlytes longer, since high organic with narrow peak bands will lead to more accurate fractions and quicker "dry-down". Better MS spray / Sensitivity will also be achievable by not only the sharp peak shapes that are achieved by Fortis C18 but also by the extra hydrophobic retention that is afforded the analyst. If less hydrophobicity is required then Fortis C8 is the phase of choice.
